Understanding the Why: Mental Health & Suicide Prevention in Construction

Suicide is personal—but it is also a public health issue that deeply affects workplaces, families, and communities. The construction industry experiences one of the highest suicide rates among professions, making awareness and prevention critical at every level of the workforce.

Part I of the VitalCog in Construction training focuses on understanding the scope of the issue and why open conversations are essential within the industry. Participants will explore the prevalence of suicide in construction, industry-specific stressors, and the role stigma plays in preventing workers from seeking help. Through evidence-based research and discussion, attendees will gain foundational knowledge of suicide risk factors and warning signs, including insights from the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.

This session builds awareness, reduces stigma, and lays the groundwork for fostering a culture that prioritizes mental health, resilience, and shared responsibility for prevention.
